Highclere Castle & Waddesdon Manor

Highclere Castle & Waddesdon Manor

The real home of 'Downton Abbey' combined with beautiful Waddesdon Manor, bequeathed to the National Trust by the Rothschilds in 1957

Highclere Castle & Waddesdon Manor

Fans around the world were distraught when "Downton Abbey" ended its sixth and final season. Aunt Violet, Carson, Lady Mary, Spratt and others left a sizeable hole when author Julian Fellowes decided that Christmas 1925 would signify their swansong.Arguably the most famous character in the show is still going strong, however: Downton Abbey itself, in real-life Highclere Castle. Plus, Waddesdon Manor. Waddesdon was created to impress. It was only used on summer weekends to entertain Baron Ferdinand's friends and family. Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted an estate where he could escape London in the summer months to entertain family and friends for weekend house parties. The Vale of Aylesbury was already known as ‘Rothschildshire’ for the number of the houses owned by the family in the area.

The Elvetham Country House Hotel

An extraordinary Victorian neo-gothic manor with fantastic history, beautiful listed architecture and spectacular interiors, The Elvetham Hotel makes for a unique and oh-so-elegant Hampshire country house hotel stay. Sitting on 35 acres of land close to Reading, Basingstoke and Farnborough, The Elvetham has history dating back to Saxon times. However, the ornate redbrick edifice you see when sweeping up the driveway is a confection of the 1860s with the requisite arched windows, dark panelled walls and enormous staircases that deliver you to the hotel’s 93 bedrooms. All rooms feature Tea/Coffee Facilities, Safe, WiFi, TV, Toiletries, Fridge and Hairdryer.
