This unspoilt region is flanked by beautiful golden beaches, over 100 miles of superb coastline and dotted with mighty castles and ancient monuments which bear testament to battles of a byegone era. Step back into the Georgian era and visit Pockerley Hall, a 1900's town featuring a bakery, garage, Co-op store, old fashioned sweet shop, a Pit village, Colliery, Farm, Tramway - even a fairground. We check into Redworth Hall late afternoon. Time to unpack and prepare for dinner this evening.

Join us after breakfast this morning on our included excursion to Alnwick Castle, the 2nd largest inhabited castle in the country, known as 'Windsor of the North' and home to the Duke of Northumberland. This fairytale castle has taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, featuring as magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbeys Christmas Specials 2014/2015 and previously as Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry in the Harry Potter movies. Alnwick is filled with one of the country's finest private art and furniture collections. The gardens are the real attraction, landscaped by Capability Brown, they include the world's greatest water garden, the Grand Cascade which sends 350 litres of water into the air every second. Not forgetting the Ornamental Garden, the Bamboo Labrinyth, Poison Garden and Tree House.

Day 3

After a leisurely hearty breakfast we head to the old University City of Durham. With delightful winding cobbled medieval streets and a prominent peninsula crowned with a dramatic Norman Castle - it's almost an island. Enjoy its colourful town centre, or relax by the riverside, take a cruise or browse its many boutiques, galleries and museums. Time for lunch before we make our return journey back to Staffordshire.
