With Christmas approaching, Lille is decked out in lights and colour. Around the Christmas market, the whole town is covered in a huge crown of garlands.

On Place Rihour, 90 wooden chalets teem with gift ideas, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. You can find regional specialities here, and you can also find arts and crafts from Russia, Canada and Poland! And that's not to forget the gingerbread and other delicacies, which you can take away or eat on the spot with a glass of mulled wine...

Day 1

We make our way south to join our crossing to France, arriving in our centrally situated hotel mid-afternoon. The Mercure Grand Place is so conveniently situated just a 3 minutes walk from the main square. Settle in your rooms and familiarise yourselves with your surroundings. There are so many restaurants and bars within a few steps from our accommodation - you will be spoilt for choice!

Day 2

The enticing aromas of mulled wine and chestnuts roasting over a brazier, pungent cheese tarts, spicy gingerbread and sweet, freshly cooked praline all add to the joyous atmosphere of the twinkling Christmas market at Place Rihour in the heart of Lille.

Wander the frosty cobbled streets of old Lille to admire the colourful Flemish facades of the 17th-century merchants' houses, beautifully decorated stores and vibrant cafés and bars. Don't miss the chance to get a bird's eye view of Lille's giant Christmas tree and the twinkling lights of the city from the top of the Ferris wheel. Christmas carols fill the air as the 50-metre high Big Wheel turns majestically, providing a fantastic view over the whole city. At its base, an artificial snow-covered village fills the entire Grand Place square, dominated by an 18-metre high Christmas tree!

OR Join us as we head to Arras. Here, the locals take their time, observe traditions such as buying delicacies for Réveillon (Christmas Eve family meal) and catch up with neighbours over a few oysters and a glass of crisp white wine. Folks in Northern France are also big on beer and savour it like a good wine.

Day 3

Today we visit Bruges, this pretty medieval city takes on a fairytale air with the intoxicating scent of fresh waffles and streets dressed like gingerbread houses. Hop on a horse-drawn carriage for a snow-dusted tour of this most beautiful medieval city, or linger at one of its most charming Christmas market stalls with a steaming glass of mulled wine.

Day 4

A leisurely breakfast begins our day, before we sadly bid farewell to Lille and retrace our steps home.
